HYPERPIGMENTATION 101: HERE’S HOW TO BRIGHTEN UP!

What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition where certain areas of the skin become darker than the surrounding skin. This occurs due to an excess production of melanin, the pigment that gives our skin its color. Hyperpigmentation can affect various parts of the body, not just the face. Common areas include the hands, arms, legs, and back.

Several factors can contribute to hyperpigmentation, and while it can be stubborn, it can be managed effectively with consistency and the right approach.

Causes

UV rays stimulate the production of melanin, leading to sun spots or age spots.

Skin injuries such as cuts, burns, acne, or eczema can result in post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Conditions like melasma, often triggered by pregnancy or birth control pills, lead to hyperpigmentation.

Certain diseases and medications can cause dark patches on the skin as a side effect.

Long term solutions

Daily use of broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is crucial to prevent further darkening.

Ingredients like Vitamin C, niacinamide, and retinoids are effective in reducing hyperpigmentation over time.

Regular exfoliation with products containing alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) helps in shedding pigmented skin cells.

Keeping the skin hydrated aids in skin repair and renewal. Our Body Balms and Body Oils are excellent for this, as they help lock in moisture and support the skin’s barrier function.

Incorporating Me Time by Sheenz Products into Your Routine

While we don’t have a product specifically targeted at hyperpigmentation, our Exfoliating Body Polish, Body Balms and Body Oils are fantastic additions to a skincare routine focused on improving overall skin health, which is vital in managing hyperpigmentation. The rich, moisturizing ingredients like shea butter, olive oil, sunflower seed oil and Vitamin E nourish the skin, support its natural healing process, and enhance the effectiveness of other active treatments you may be using.

'Active' ingredients to consider for Hyperpigmentation

For those specifically targeting hyperpigmentation, you might want to include products containing: VITAMIN C: Brightens the skin and reduces the appearance of dark spots. NIACINAMIDE: Reduces inflammation and controls melanin production. RETINOIDS: Promote skin cell turnover, which helps in reducing dark spots over time.

A highly recommended brand – NATURIUM SKIN CARE. They have amazing facial cleansers and body washes with active ingredients.
In Uganda, I have seen them stocked at Khwezi Beauty
